STYLING THE ZODIAC SIGNS 2022

Our seamstress and astrology buff, Kirstie, walks us through each zodiac sign and assigns each a Star Cadet design.

WHAT'S YOUR SIGN?

Our seamstress and astrology buff, Kirstie, walks us through each zodiac sign and assigns each a Star Cadet design.

Hi, howdy, I’m Kirstie, and I’m Star Cadet’s resident astrologer (to be clear, not a professional). My coworkers must ABSOLUTELY be humoring me when they allow me to rant on and on about astrology. Most of them know little to nothing about it, but every once in a while I’ll bring it up or, knowing how I am, they’ll ask me certain things about their signs. When Amberle came to me and proposed that I choose a design from our Star Cadet collection to match with each of the zodiac signs, I was stoked. Allow me to take you through my process for that, and to break down why I made my selections for each individual sign. Knowing that astrology isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, this post is purely meant for fun, so I hope you enjoy it!

THE BASICS OF ASTROLOGY

If you know nothing about astrology, I’ll begin by explaining some of the basics. Each sign belongs to a particular element; those elements are fire, earth, air, and water. The Zodiac has 12 signs, each encompassing about a month’s worth of time, and each element containing 3 signs. The elemental placements are as follows:

  • Fire- Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
    • Earth- Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
    • Air- Gemini, Libra, Aquarius*.
    • Water- Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

Each element has its own “typical” attributes, (ex. Earth signs are stable and patient) and each sign therein has common attributes that branch out from the element. When I was choosing which design I wanted to match to each sign, I started by picking out 3 adjectives to describe each individual sign (with the help of one of my astrology books), and then thought of the general vibe that those adjectives made me think of in relation to each sign. Each sign, as well, has a “mantra” or a saying that encompasses the drive or personality of the sign.

With these things in mind, I began to think about which of the designs seemed to match the vibe of each sign. I took into account color, graphics, and slogans from the shirts, as well as the elements of each sign, and the descriptors I’d chosen. Below, I’m going to list each sign, its mantra, and the words that I chose to represent that sign. I’ll then provide a brief explanation for my reasoning behind what I picked. Enjoy!

* Yes, Aquarius is an air sign, not a water sign. It is often confused as a water sign because of the “aqua” in the name as well as its symbol as the “water-bearer,” but it does, in fact, belong to the element of air.

PHOENIX RISE & RISE AGAIN

ARIES - "I AM"

ENTHUSIASTIC, ASSERTIVE, PASSIONATE

PHOENIX RISE & RISE AGAIN

I felt this design really embodied the fight and tenacity that Aries possesses. The Phoenix rises from the ashes, and fiery Aries can certainly handle the heat. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and possesses a reckless abandon that can often propel them forward. Aries loves a risk, and many times can find a way–somehow–to maneuver out of a risk unscathed.

TAURUS - "I HAVE"

CONSISTENT, DETERMINED, SENSUAL

THUNDER FLANNEL

Taurus is all about comfort, and when I think of flannel, I think of comfort. This soft fabric also comes in an olive colorway, which reminds me of the earthy tones with Taurus, and their down-to-earth nature as well.

NEVER STOP LOOKING UP

GEMINI - "I THINK"

CLEVER, CURIOUS, RESTLESS

NEVER STOP LOOKING UP

This air sign is represented by “the twins,” and that was the first thing that drew me to choose this design and the graphic of the two-headed bear. I also thought that the slogan, “Never Stop Looking Up” matched the energy of Gemini, and their inquisitive nature, their constant search for knowledge. Gemini is a very adaptable sign as well, and the slogan made me think of their ability to be somewhat of a chameleon in social situations.

CANCER - "I FEEL"

CARING, EMPATHETIC, SENTIMENTAL

DOING MY BEST BUT...

“Doing My Best But I’m Dying Inside,” in my opinion, could not sum up the sign of Cancer better. They feel deeply–the good and the bad–but they persevere through all feelings; their nature is often to be a support system for loved ones, so even when they’re dying inside, they’ll be trying their best.

DON'T GROW UP

LEO - "I EXPRESS"

CHARISMATIC, PROUD, BRAVE

DON'T GROW UP

Leo is represented by the lion, and although this design doesn’t have a lion on it, I thought many of the sentiments remained. The tiger is a very strong and powerful animal, and Leos are often very strong and powerful people. I thought the saying, “Don’t Grow Up, It’s A Trap,” really embodied the youthful, fun-loving personality of many Leos. They’re young at heart and desire to keep that youth and liveliness forever.

VIRGO - "I ANALYZE"

HUMBLE, HELPFUL, EFFICIENT

CENTURY WORK SHIRT

Virgo rivals Capricorn in the realm of hard work, but I felt this work-shirt better represented Virgo. They are straightforward, skilled, and low-key. Virgo isn’t flashy–they enjoy practicality and function over anything. The work shirt is a great choice for getting things done and being comfortable, but also rocking some of our awesome merch.

STAR CADET CENTURY

CENTURY TIE-DYE PULLOVER

LIBRA - "I BALANCE"

CHARMING, COMPROMISING, FLEXIBLE

CENTURY TIE-DYE PULLOVER

The tie-dyed design on this pullover sweater made me think of smoke and air, fitting for Libra, represented by the scales. Libra is all about balance and adaptation; the design coupled with the style–pullover sweater–even made me think of the transition from winter to spring, and being comfortable even when the weather is changing.

SCORPIO - "I TRANSFORM"

INTENSE, DEEP, SULTRY

BEAR VS. SNAKE

With Scorpio, I think of someone interesting and armored, someone sensitive but deeply protective of themselves, and someone who is super cool. For me, this design seemed to check all the boxes. This is one of my personal favorite designs from this collection, because the graphic is so dynamic and interesting, and Scorpio is also dynamic and interesting. It’s just a cool design to complement a cool sign.

THUNDER TIGER

SAGITTARIUS - "I SEE"

INDEPENDENT, HONEST, OPTIMISTIC

THUNDER TIGER

Going back to fire, I think of big cats and their vicious nature; Sagittarius is a very confident sign: sure of themselves with a win-at-all-costs type of personality. They can be the life of the party, the comedian, the initiator; they can often be loud and command a room, and this made me think of thunder. The pop of red on the lightning bolt also pays an homage to this fire sign.

CAPRICORN - "I USE"

RESPONSIBLE, AMBITIOUS, DUTIFUL

GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY

With this design, I thought a lot about Han Solo, obviously. I’m sure I could look online and find a breakdown of the zodiac signs for each of the Star Wars characters, but I didn’t bother looking that up. The epic that is Star Wars made me think of determination; even the three adjectives that I chose to describe Capricorn make me think of the Star Wars universe, and the search for reformation and the desire to make things work in a broken system. I couldn’t think of a sign better to embody that idea than Capricorn.

BATTLE

AQUARIUS - "I KNOW"

INNOVATIVE, INTELLECTUAL, UNCONVENTIONAL

BATTLE

Aquarius is one of the most mentally strong signs of the zodiac. Coupling that idea with battle bear, it made me think a bit of “mind over matter;” the ability to think oneself out of any situation. Aquarius can be cunning in a game of mental besting, and that’s where their strength comes from. But the ferocity of the battle bear made me think of the brute force behind Aquarius’s search for growth in all aspects. They don’t reveal a lot, but they take in everything.

PISCES - "I BELIEVE"

SENSITIVE, ROMANTIC, INTUITIVE

STARSTRUCK Y2K

Pisces is chill, romantic, and nostalgic. The pink Y2K design felt perfect for this. We get the soft blush color, the smiley face with star eyes that makes me think of a super cool pair of sunglasses, and the whole throw-back vibe. Pisces is just a really cool sign to be around, they should have an equally cool shirt. It’s simple, but it works.
